A survey of 1,100 London residents asked about their views on life in the Big Smoke, with 65% stating that housing had deteriorated and 67% indicating that the NHS and other public services had declined since the beginning of 2023.

Another 58% surveyed by YouGov and the Mile End Institute at Queen Mary University of (QMUL) felt that overall crime had worsened, while 50% claimed they had 'not very much trust' or 'no trust at all' in the London However, it is not all negative. More than half (57%) believed that public transport had remained the same or improved during this time, and 60% said the same about the environment. Met Police.

When asked to sum up London in one word,

60% described the city as 'expensive' compared to 38% who chose 'diverse', 33% 'crowded', and 21% 'cultural'.Despite all this dissatisfaction, the QMUL team stated that Londoners have 'relatively little desire' to leave the city.

Despite many being dissatisfied with certain aspects of London life, there are many things that Londoners are proud of. When asked to list the best things about London, the wide range of activities and attractions, the diversity of the population and culture, and access to public transport were frequently mentioned.

When we asked Londoners on Twitter, they highlighted a wide range of advantages to staying in the city, including diversity, community, arts and entertainment, and 'fewer Tories and/or racists' as cited by writer Tom Huddleston.

Another person, Courtney, simply stated: 'I've been here for 20 years now and I think I would be bored anywhere else.'

For some people, their poor health makes London the best place to live, such as Jen, who has a complex chronic illness to manage.

She says London offers the best specialist care in Europe for it, and she told Metro.co.uk: 'I know that my health would be affected if I moved away, regardless of the quality of life benefits living elsewhere could bring.

'Also, when I'm low on spoons, the convenience of quick home delivery of anything from takeaways to supermarket basics is a godsend.'
