NORRISTOWN — Children First and Healthy NewsWorks will host a public meeting in Norristown on May 23, to discuss mental health support for children and adolescents in Montgomery County. Children, teenagers, families, and community members are encouraged to attend the free event. Dinner will be provided.
As per Children First, kids in Pennsylvania from various backgrounds experience similar rates of general anxiety and depression, as well as more severe issues related to suicidal thoughts. 40% of PA students express feeling consistently sad or depressed; 16% report planning suicide and 12% have made an attempt.
Children First suggests that since children and teenagers spend most of their time at school, it makes sense to have qualified staff who can provide mental health support there. However, the question remains – what would this support look like, and where would the funding come from?
“How We Heal: Youth Mental Health Film Screening and Panel Discussion” will present a 20-minute film created by students, showcasing methods for overcoming mental health challenges and trauma. Following the screening, a panel discussion will feature a student, a parent, an educator, and a mental health professional.
The event will be held at the MCIU on 2 West Lafayette Street in Norristown. It's scheduled for May 23, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and the program starting at 5:30 p.m.
