Thai police in charge of stopping human trafficking have captured an American man who escaped from a 25-year prison term in the United States for abduction, sex trafficking, and other offenses, authorities announced on Tuesday.
According to a statement from Thai police, Selva Delano Mudaliar was sentenced to a minimum of 25 years in a court in Oregon in March of this year. He faced 11 charges, which also involved strangling and coercion.
The 37-year-old fled to Thailand while on parole and resided in the country for over three months, frequently changing hotels and apartments, as stated by the police.
After the US Federal Bureau of Investigation requested assistance from Thai authorities, he was apprehended on Friday at a building in Bangkok. He now awaits extradition.
Senior officer Korkiat Wutthijamnong of the Royal Thai Police’s Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression unit informed the press that it is believed Mr. Selva was aware that he was being pursued by the police.
He also expressed concerns that Mudaliar might engage in similar sexual violence in Thailand as he did in the US.
Michael Chai, the legal attache at the US embassy in Bangkok, expressed gratitude towards the Thai police.
