Luke Littler didn't make it as Luke Humphries names top two darts players worldwide

Luke Humphries believed he was facing the top two players on the planet on the stage when he defeated Michael van Gerwen in the final of the German Darts Grand Prix on Monday.

The world champion was in amazing form in Munich as he easily went through the field with a series of high averages and then crushed MVG in the final.

Cool Hand had an average of 112.66 to defeat Van Gerwen 8-1 and confirm his position as the best in darts at the moment.

Humphries is well aware of how good he is currently and believes that Van Gerwen is one of the top two players in the world.

‘I think the two best players in the world were battling it out. I know 8-1 is a bit of a flattering score but me and Michael will have many finals in the future,’ Humphries said after his stunning win.

‘The way I’ve played this weekend is the levels you have to be to win – that’s how crazy the game’s got and that’s how good you have to be to beat the likes of Michael.

‘He’s been here for 10 years, consistently one of the best players in the world and I look up to him a lot, so to beat him in another final is fantastic.

‘I just love playing him to be honest, he shows a lot of respect and it was a great final. That’s elite sport – sometimes it’s your day and today was my day.’

The world rankings back up Humphries’ point, with the Englishman at number one and the Dutchman number two.

Luke Littler may still be dominating the headlines but the 17-year-old is at number 26 in the world as he continues to climb the rankings in his debut season as a professional.

He will be much higher than #26 by the end of the year and looks set for many years competing at the top of the rankings, but Humphries is top dog right now, as MVG admits.

‘I think at this moment he is the best player and we all have to face it, we have to battle but he also knows this is not going to run forever,’ said Van Gerwen. ‘He’s playing some cracking darts, I have to admit that.’

Humphries clearly feels that Littler is not far behind, though, saying last month that only two players can challenge him when he is firing.

‘I’m not arrogant at all but I feel like if I play my A game, there are only a couple of people who can test me in that manner,’ Humphries told Sky Sports.

‘I think Luke Littler and Michael van Gerwen are the two that can push me and their A level can beat me.’
