A British visitor has passed away in northern Spain after entering the ocean.
The man, who has not been named but has been confirmed as 62 years old by the Civil Guard, was believed to have entered the ocean after taking a walk with his wife.
It is believed that he was knocked off his feet by a unexpected wave and hit his head.
Local reports indicate he is one of four individuals who lost their lives as Storm Nelson hits the Mediterranean country.
The tragedy occurred at an old fishing village which is now a marina called San Esteban de Pravia, west of the town of Gijon.
The mayor of the village says he had traveled to the area for a brief vacation with his wife.
A spokesperson for a regional government-run emergency response co-ordination center said: ‘The Asturias Fire Rescue Group on board the medicalised helicopter of the Emergency Service of the Principality of Asturias (SEPA) has rescued the lifeless body of a man who fell into the sea at the San Esteban breakwater, in Muros del Nalón.
‘His body was evacuated to the breakwater itself where the Civil Guard took charge of the situation.
‘The deceased individual was located in the San Esteban estuary and was evacuated to the helicopter using a crane mechanism in which 30 meters of cable were deployed.
‘The Asturias Emergency Coordination Centre received the call at a minute past 1pm, saying a man had just fallen into the sea.
‘The rescue group and emergency response helicopter were mobilized along with another team of firefighters.
‘The Red Cross and coastguards were also alerted but did not end up getting involved.
‘The victim’s body was located and recovered at 1.48pm and taken to the breakwater.’
Three other individuals are reported to have lost their lives during Storm Nelson today in Spain, including a woman who fell into the sea in the port of Cudillero.
A teenager, as well as a 30-year-old German man who got into difficulty trying to rescue the teen, drowned in the eastern coast city of Tarragona.
