The Islamic State group has said it was behind the assault on the Moscow concert hall on Friday. At least 40 people died, and more than 100 civilians were injured.
The group took responsibility for the attack in a statement on Friday evening. It was shared by SITE, an intelligence group.
Russia’s Health Ministry listed 145 people who were injured, The Associated Press reported earlier on Friday.
The U.S. received information that Islamic State-Khorasan, also known as ISIS-K, a branch based in Afghanistan, had been planning an assault on Moscow, Russia’s capital, according to The New York Times, citing a U.S. official.
Video from the Crocus City Hall music venue showed at least three gunmen using automatic weapons to shoot at people. They also used explosives during the attack.
White House spokesperson John Kirby said the footage is “hard to watch,” but added there was no evidence of Ukraine being involved in the attack.
“The images are just horrible. Just hard to watch, and our thoughts obviously are going to be with the victims of this terrible, terrible shooting attack,” Kirby said on Friday. “No indication at this time that Ukraine or Ukrainians were involved in the shooting.”
