Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag confirmed that Alejandro Garnacho apologised after he liked tweets criticising his substitution in the 2-2 draw with Bournemouth.
Garnacho was taken off at half-time after a disappointing first-half performance and with United 2-1 down against the Cherries.
However, the Argentine found himself in more trouble after the game, when he liked two posts on X from YouTuber Mark Goldbridge who labelled the substitution of Garnacho as a ‘joke’.
Earlier in the week, a United spokesperson said that the incident had been handled internally and Ten Hag has now confirmed that the 19-year-old has apologised for the act.
‘Alejandro is a young player,’ the Dutchman said, speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of United’s FA Cup semi-final against Coventry.
‘He has to learn a lot. He has apologised for it and we move on.’
It is not the first time that Ten Hag has had to deal with disciplinary issues with members of his squad this season.
Jadon Sancho was banished from training and eventually sent out on loan to Borussia Dortmund after criticizing his manager on social media – and then refusing to apologize.
In November last year, the 54-year-old described Marcus Rashford’s actions as ‘unacceptable’ after the English forward was photographed attending a nightclub party only hours after their 3-0 derby defeat to Manchester City.
Ten Hag’s focus now shifts to their upcoming match with Coventry at Wembley on Sunday.
It is United’s last chance of winning a trophy in an otherwise disappointing season for the Red Devils, and Ten Hag insisted his side would not underestimate the task at hand against their Championship opposition.
‘They are dangerous. They are in the semi-finals. They do a fantastic job over there and we have seen the game against Wolves in the quarter-final, the mentality is fabulous,’ he said.
