The day when you can enter National Parks for free is approaching. It's on Saturday, April 20

Are you a fan of the Great Outdoors?

To start off the yearly National Park Week, which in 2024 will take place from April 20-28, the park service is providing free entry. The park service is waiving the entrance fees for its parks and monuments on Saturday, April 20. This could save you $50 or more, but here's what you need to know, from someone who's taken advantage of it before.

Arrive early in the morning. I know, it might be tough, but then you'll be there before the large crowds. As you can imagine, free passes are very popular.

You don't have to register or sign up. Just show up and go in.

These are the nine national parks in California: Channel Islands (the boat ride won't be free), Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Kings Canyon, Lassen, Pinnacles, Redwood, Sequoia, Yosemite. You can also drive to Zion National Park in Utah — one of my favorites — in about eight hours.

For me, I recommend Joshua Tree National Park, which is my preferred spot nearby. I even purchased a property there. Here's my suggestion:

Start your journey before dawn with snacks, sandwiches, water, a swimsuit, and a towel. Watch the beautiful sunrise over Mt. San Jacinto, which is a truly amazing sight. At this time, there won't be much traffic, so you should reach the western park entrance in around 90 minutes, depending on where you begin.

Go straight to the Wonderland of Rocks area from the town of Joshua Tree, where there are several interesting trails. That's my favorite part of the park. Alternatively, you could continue driving to 29 Palms and visit the park headquarters, where there's also a trail. We usually hike around until the crowds show up around 11 a.m. Then we depart, stop in town for an early lunch, and go to Desert Hot Springs to purchase an inexpensive day pass for the pools at the Desert Hot Springs Hotel & Spa. Yes, it's very '70s and not very fancy. But the warm water feels fantastic. You could also get a massage if you've booked it beforehand.

After that, return home feeling refreshed and clear-headed.

If you've never visited Yosemite, why not? Perhaps April 20 is your opportunity. Just be aware that there will still be snow up there, so dress warmly and check for road closures.

Remember that there will be special national park events throughout the week, so check online to see what's on offer. And enjoy!

All national parks and monuments can be visited for free on the first day of National Park Week.
