Even though it's still early in the spring, it's a good idea to start planning for the busy summer travel season, especially if you want to make sure you get the flights and hotels you want. If you haven't yet decided on a destination, whether you want to stay in the U.S. or go abroad, now is the time to think about it.

If you're looking for inspiration or you want to know where everyone else is going so you can avoid big crowds, it's good to know the most searched-for summer travel destinations of 2024, according to data from Google Flights. Google compiled the number of searches by U.S. users for each destination with travel dates from June 1 to Aug. 31 to determine these rankings.

The top 20 destinations from Google Flights are mostly the usual choices, but there are a couple of surprises. Paris is at the top of the list, with Tokyo following in third place and Rome in fourth. Cancun, a favorite warm-weather spot for Americans, dropped to sixth place this year. The 2024 list also includes Madrid and San Juan, which are new to the list.

A number of popular U.S. destinations also made it to the top 20, such as Boston, Denver, Fort Lauderdale, Honolulu, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, Orlando, and Seattle. However, Chicago and San Francisco are not on the list this year.

Google Flights also provided rankings for the top five most searched-for global destinations for couples, families, and solo travelers. Turks and Caicos was the only place that made it into the top five in all three categories.
