Seven passengers were taken to the hospital on Friday after a flight going to Newark from Israel had sudden, violent movements and strong winds.
United Flight 85, which was going to Newark, N.J. from Tel Aviv, had to go to Stewart International Airport in New Windsor, N.Y. on Friday because of the dangerous winds, according to officials, The Associated Press reported. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced
in a statement that the flight had to land because of “a passenger medical emergency,” which the crew reported. The FAA will investigate what happened. New Windsor EMS Chief Michael Bigg said that seven passengers from the plane were injured and are receiving care at a hospital in New York. Bigg also mentioned that passengers felt sick and had chest pain because of the sudden, violent movements, according to
United Airlines communicated in an email to The Hill that Flight 85 landed at Stewart International Airport “after encountering strong winds at Newark.” NBC News.
“One passenger left the plane due to a medical incident, and a few other customers were checked by medical staff for possible motion sickness,” the statement continued. “The flight got more fuel and continued to Newark.”
There were no serious injuries reported, according to the AP.
Friday's United redirection comes after a series of
negative incidents for the airline, which includes a recent losing a tire during takeoff. The airline mentioned last week that the FAA is increasing its supervision of United Airlines after those incidents. plane Sasha Johnson, United’s vice president of corporate safety, informed employees in a memo earlier this month that the “number of safety-related events in recent weeks have rightly forced us to stop and think about whether there is anything we can and should do differently.”
