Manchester United are ready to use Mason Greenwood as an additional incentive in a player-plus-cash deal for Juventus star Gleison Bremer in the summer transfer window.
Bremer made a move from Torino to Juventus after being named Serie A’s top defender for 2021/22 and the 27-year-old’s performance has continued to be impressive in his first two years in Turin.
The defender has played in almost all of Juve’s games in the Italian top flight this season and has been a major factor in the club having the second-best defensive record in the league behind leaders Inter Milan.
It is known that United have been keeping an eye on Bremer’s performances throughout the season and the club are reportedly trying to make an offer to lure Bremer away from Juve based on the recommendation of incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth
United are well aware that Bremer will not come cheap, with Juventus asking for a fee of at least €60-70million (£51-60m) plus bonuses for their prized possession according to La Gazzetta dello Sport.
The report suggests the Red Devils are not hesitating about meeting Juve’s high financial demands for Bremer and could even use Greenwood as part of a deal for the Brazil international.
The Serie A giants have been increasingly resigned to losing Bremer at the end of the season and have identified Bologna’s Riccardo Calafiori as a possible replacement in their defense.
Bremer signed a new contract with the club in December, keeping the sought-after Brazilian at the club until 2028.
It’s known that Juve sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli admires Greenwood, and this could benefit United in their pursuit of Bremer.
After United completed their internal investigation into Greenwood’s off-field actions, the forward – capped once by England – moved on loan to Getafe.
In January 2022, Greenwood, considered one of Europe’s best young talents at the time, was arrested on suspicion of rape, controlling behaviour and assault – charges which were later dropped.
As a result, the Red Devils decided Greenwood should continue his career elsewhere and the 22-year-old has performed well in Spain, scoring six goals and providing five assists in 24 La Liga appearances.
It is still unknown where Greenwood will be playing next season, with Barcelona and Atletico Madrid both showing interest in the attacker, as well as Juventus.
Speaking shortly after his £1.3bn partial takeover at Old Trafford, Sir Jim Ratcliffe seemed to suggest that Greenwood could still have a future at United.
‘We will make a decision, correct,’ Ratcliffe said.
‘All I can do is talk about the principle of how we will approach decisions like that. Is he the right type of footballer, are we happy with if he is a good person or not?
‘He’s a Manchester United football player, so we are responsible for soccer.
'So the answer is, 'Yes, we have to make choices.' It's very clear we have to make a choice. There hasn't been a choice made.
'He's on loan obviously, but he's not the only one. We have one or two football players that we need to handle and we need to make a decision on, so we will do that.
'The process will be: understand the facts not the hype, and then try to reach a fair decision based on values, which basically means is he a good person or not?'
'Could he play genuinely for Manchester United well, would we be comfortable with it and would the fans be comfortable with it?'
In a separate interview with the BBC, United’s new co-owner added: 'We need to look at facts, judge fairly and take into consideration what the values of the club are.
'Then we come out of that with a decision. It is not appropriate for me to comment on Mason Greenwood.'
