The Thai Embassy in Washington DC has confirmed that no Thais have been injured in the accident where a major bridge in Baltimore collapsed after being hit by a cargo ship. The embassy said, "The embassy has checked with Thai communities and students and found no Thais affected by the accident."
However, the embassy will continue to watch the US rescue mission, which is expected to take days to finish, as per the Thai Foreign Ministry.
The disaster happened at 1:30am (0530 GMT), with the large bridge collapsing rapidly, as shown in video footage capturing the moment the ship, loaded with containers, crashed into one of the bridge supports.
The bridge, which was opened in 1977, collapsed quickly and completely.
The number of casualties is still unclear, with divers and other specialist rescue teams searching the cold waters of the Patapsco River, which flows into a busy industrial harbor just north of the capital, Washington DC.
