A man was taken to the hospital with severe injuries after men wearing masks and carrying large knives violently entered a boxing event in Ireland.
The police were called to Castlerea Boxing Club in Castlerea, County Roscommon, during Friday’s National Boy 4 Boxing Championship quarterfinals.
Footage on social media showed horrified onlookers, competitors and officials fleeing after a group of men burst into the venue.
A man in his 40s got a cut on his face but the police said he could have been killed during the fight, as per the Irish Examiner. Irish Examiner.
Video showed the man trying to protect himself from up to four men, three of them in masks, with a chair.
One attacked the chair with a large knife before the victim ran away with the men following closely. Other attackers seemed to be using slash hooks.
Investigators believe the mayhem, which lasted only 40 seconds, arose among members of a ‘feuding family’.
The police are examining videos of the incident and gathering local information.
Authorities are asking for anyone who might have seen a White/Silver Audi A4 car in the Castlerea and Ballintubber areas of Roscommon between 8.30pm and 11.30pm to get in touch with them.
The force said in a statement: ‘Law enforcement is requesting witnesses following an alleged assault at a location at Demesne, Castlerea, Co. Roscommon, on the evening of Friday 1 March 2024.
‘The incident occurred at approximately 9.45pm, when a male, aged in his 40’s, was assaulted.
‘He received medical treatment at the scene and was later transported to Galway University Hospital for treatment for severe injuries. No further injuries were reported at the time.’
