Greg James has revealed the reason he chose to ‘snub’ the Brit Awards 2024 on Saturday.
The BBC Radio One breakfast show host, 38, skipped the weekend’s award ceremony and gave his tickets to top fans Charlie and Meg as an engagement gift, while he stayed home to look after their seven-year-old daughter.
Making the announcement on his popular breakfast show last week, Greg said: ‘You may have heard that Bella, my wife, didn’t want to go to the Brits this weekend. So I’ve been trying to decide who I would want to take with me and I keep coming back to both of you in my head because I love you both.’
‘I think you’re brilliant. You’ve brought so much joy to this show – the listeners absolutely love you,’ he told Charlie and Meg – who have appeared on Greg’s show before and are popular among his other listeners.
‘I thought maybe it would be quite fun if we swapped lives for the evening,’ Greg suggested.
This left Greg babysitting Charlie and Meg’s seven-year-old daughter while they attended the awards ceremony in London.
Greg travelled to their home in Swansea on Saturday, telling fans on Instagram that he planned on watching the event on TV with Maisie.
‘Charlie and Meg are Brits ready,’ he said, sharing a video of the lucky couple sitting in the audience. ‘And so are me and Maisie! She’s definitely enjoying my phone.’
A series of pictures and videos from their day together showed Greg sipping a champagne flute with Maisie by his side – painting each others’ nails, on the monkey bars in the park, and playing with her doll’s house at home.
A rota of ‘chores’ pinned to the fridge included washing the dishes (don’t forget pink gloves), reading with Maisie, salon time (pretty pink nails!) and board games.
‘Our baby girl has had an absolute blast! And so have we!! What an absolutely incredible night with lifelong memories! We are forever grateful, you a true gent,’ Maisie’s mum, Meg, commented afterwards.
‘You already know this, but she is absolutely amazing,’ Greg replied.
Followers in the comments were in awe of Greg’s generosity, and chimed in to praise the radio presenter.
‘Greg this is so wholesome! The radio stuff is awesome but stuff like this is the reason that you are elite,’ wrote @_adkin.
‘Best use of Brits tickets ever. You legend,’ said @imkatepeers.
‘We need more people in the world like you Greg!!’ agreed sjerainbows81.
‘Greg, you are an absolute beacon of light, please never change! The best nonsense ever ❤️’ said @laylamacowan.
He later shared details of his day on X, describing the event as ‘my favourite Brits ever. And I made a new pal. Maisie ❤️’
‘A really great day that,’ he added.
No regrets, then!
