The family of Joe Lieberman, former Senator of Connecticut, has reported that he has passed away at the age of 82 due to complications from a fall on Wednesday. Lieberman almost became the vice president on Al Gore’s Democratic ticket in the controversial 2000 White House race. Eight years later, he came close to being John McCain’s running mate for the GOP. He left the Senate in January 2013 after 24 years, having changed from a Democrat to an independent. His independent actions sometimes annoyed Senate Democrats he was associated with, but his support for gay rights, civil rights, abortion rights, and environmental causes occasionally earned him praise from many liberals throughout the years.
