Chicago’s so-called “rat hole” has been removed. A Chicago sidewalk landmark some affectionately call the “rat hole” after city officials found that the section with the imprint of an animal was damaged. A representative for the Chicago Department of Transportation says the square section of sidewalk was placed in temporary storage. It contains an impression resembling the outline of a rat — claws, tail and all. But there is a rigorous debate over whether a squirrel is truly responsible. Neighbors in the residential area have complained of noise and mess left by people coming to see the quirky landmark since a social media post spiked interest in January.

On Wednesday, President Biden granted clemency to 16 individuals who were convicted of nonviolent drug offenses, stating that the pardons and reduced sentences demonstrate his commitment to addressing racial inequalities. The president pardoned 11 people and reduced the sentences of five others, pointing out that many of them received “unfairly lengthy sentences” compared to what they would receive under current laws.
