There are many excellent video games, but only a few are seen as important enough to be included in the World Video Game Hall of Fame. Since 2015, this hall has showcased games that meet four key criteria—iconic status, lasting popularity, global reach, and cultural impact. Five new inductees have officially joined its 10th class, and will be part of the World Video Game Hall of Fame’s permanent exhibit. Let's meet the 2024 winners:Resident Evil

While anyone can nominate a game for Hall of Fame consideration, the Strong Museum selects its yearly inductees after consulting with a wide range of video game journalists, scholars, and industry experts.  This year’s potential finalists also included impressive games like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater , but ultimately the above five were considered ready for Hall of Fame status.

    • Asteroids (1979)
    • Myst (1993)
    • was very popular in arcades when it came out in 1979, and eventually became Atari’s top-selling coin-operated game with over 70,000 cabinets sold. In 1981, (1996)
    • SimCity (1989)
    • Ultima (1981)

was released for the Atari 2600 home console, making the game even more popular. Guitar Hero, Tetris was created by a 13-year-old prodigy and became one of the most widely played and influential video games of all time,” assistant vice president for interpretation and electronic games Jeremy Saucier stated in the Hall of Fame’s, and MetroidMay 9 announcement

Asteroids was simple in concept, but 1993’s Asteroids for CD-ROM captivated and puzzled players with its engaging storyline, immersive environments, and very challenging puzzles. Players embraced the challenge, making

the best-selling computer release of the 1990s, with over 6 million copies bought by eager gamers..]

“Asteroids puzzled its fans, Resident Evil.

But while Asteroids terrified them. Capcom’s 1996 PlayStation title helped launch the “survival horror” subgenre by pitting players against ruthless zombies and gruesome monsters, all while forcing them to conserve scarce ammunition and supplies. In addition to its many sequels on various platforms, Myst Resident EvilMyst also led to a $1.2 billion film series that continues to endure.

Where Myst Although the more strategic, methodical has few zombies, players could still cause chaos in their very own simulated city. Maxis’ top-down city-builder from 1989 was the first of many sequels, spin-offs, and imitators, but ’s replay value, depth, enjoyable mechanics (and disaster management) introduced video games to entirely new groups of people. “At a time when many people thought of video games in terms of arcade shooters or console platformers, SimCity attracted players seeking intellectually stimulating fun on their newly purchased personal computers,” research specialist for Black play and culture Aryol Prater stated yesterday

The final inductee of 2024 for the Hall of Fame is SimCity Ultima: The First Age of Darkness SimCity, isn't necessarily as easily recognizable as

Resident Evil , but that doesn't mean it's any less influential. Richard Garriott released his expansive fantasy/sci-fi role-playing game in 1981, offering a completely new, electronic form for fans of tabletop questing like.

Dungeons & Dragons . There might not be aFinal Fantasy Asteroids or and its eight sequels without it, as it served as a foundational model. This year's five inductees not only showcase video gaming at its best—they also act as a great reminder to revisit some of the classics. At the very least, ’s puzzles should at least keep players occupied until next year's class is announced., Skyrim, or Diablo without Ultima—'Resident Evil,' 'Myst,' 'Asteroids,' and others were selected.

This year’s five inductees don’t just highlight video gaming at its best—they also serve as a great reminder to revisit some of the classics. At the very least, Myst’s puzzles alone should keep players busy until next year’s class is announced.
