Maine is now a sanctuary state for transgender people despite threats of violence

Maine Governor Janet Mills (D) signed a new law despite violent threats from religious and political extremist groups. The new law makes the state a sanctuary for transgender people, abortion providers, and patients. The law gives legal protections to those seeking gender-affirming and reproductive health care services in Maine.

It establishes access to such treatment as a legal right and makes interference with or provision of such services against the public policy of the state.

LD 227 also shields healthcare providers in Maine from legal action originating in other states that restrict such services.

It also safeguards people seeking legal healthcare in Maine and doctors providing it, granting them the right to sue for damages if targeted for legal action by other states.

Officials in several states have tried to obtain detailed medical records for transgender teens, their families, and healthcare providers.

The law explicitly includes the World Professional Association of Transgender Health’s Standards of Care. This law is similar to those passed in Massachusetts and Vermont..

Conservative opponents have tried to portray it as a measure that promotes child trafficking, with Maine Republicans labeling it the “transgender trafficking bill.”

In early March, the Maine State House and offices of the Maine Democratic Party were evacuated due to bomb threats targeting the state capitol and specific lawmakers.

The threats followed social media posts from an anti-LGBTQ+ influencer's account about LD 227, listing the names and email addresses of the bill’s sponsors. Gia Drew, executive director of EqualityMaine, expressed gratitude for the law being signed, emphasizing its importance amidst efforts in other states to restrict reproductive and transgender healthcare. reported.

Despite bomb threats and misinformation, Maine legislators and the governor stood by their decision to enact the law.
