This is the scary moment when a fairground ride broke and hit a student.

Caitlin Colclough, who is 19, was on the 'Superstar' ride when a big part of it came loose and flew toward her on Wednesday.

The metal piece hit two groups of students, almost hitting people who were standing to the side and watching the ride.

Caitlin was hit by the large metal piece and was quickly taken to the hospital with a concussion and whiplash.

Her mother Mandy Hancock told StokeOnTrentlive: 'I was very upset watching the video.

'When I saw it in slow motion, it was very, very frightening. It has given me a few nightmares.

'I'm not sure if she heard the noise because there was a lot of screaming from the people on the ride and enjoying it.

The metal piece landed on them, but the ride kept going. I thought it would have an emergency stop.

This is the terrifying moment part of a fairground ride broke off before hitting a student who ended up in hospital. Caitlin Colclough, from Kidsgrove, was on the fast-moving ?Superstar? ride when a large panel came away and hurtled towards the ground. Video footage taken by Caitlin's friend shows the panel hitting two cartloads of students and narrowly missing bystanders as it crashed to the ground, sending shards of glass flying. Nineteen-year-old Caitlin's family say she was struck by the panel and was rushed to A&E by ambulance after suffering concussion and whiplash. She has since undergone a CT scan on Sunday which came back all clear. The Health and Safety Executive has launched an investigation into the incident which happened last Wednesday (March 27) at the University of Chester's Chestival event where Caitlin is a student.

The ride was part of the University of Chester's 'Chestival' event, where Caitlin is a student.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating what happened.

Chester Students' Union stated that the ride was provided by an external operator.

But Mandy said there has been 'radio silence' from the union and the University.

She said: 'Staff at Countess of Chester Hospital said the concussion can take a few weeks to resolve.

'She's having trouble seeing clearly, intense headaches, and feeling dizzy when she stands up, which makes her feel nauseous.

'It's disappointing how it has been handled after the accident. The support that has been in place has been very limited.'

'I would never say a bad word about Chester Uni, because up until this point it has been very positive, but it's just looking at what can change moving forward.'

Jamie Morris, Chief Executive Officer of Chester Students' Union, said: 'There was an incident involving a fairground ride at Chestival (a Chester Students' Union organised event held at Exton Park Campus) on Wednesday 27 March, and the ride was closed immediately.

'Two students were taken to hospital as a precaution and were discharged on the same day. Both the Students' Union and the University's Wellbeing team has been in close contact with the students throughout to offer support.

'The incident has been reported to the HSE to pick up with the external ride operator as necessary.'
