Former Manchester United captain Bryan Robson likes Bruno Fernandes, but would rather see either Harry Maguire or Casemiro leading the team.
Fernandes is important for Erik ten Hag’s team, but there's debate about his captaincy, with Gary Neville not wanting him as captain and and other ex-United players saying he's not the best choice.
Robson agrees, and while he appreciates Fernandes as a player and person, he prefers a player in a deeper position to lead the team.
‘I think Bruno sets a good example. He works hard and has a great attitude. But he's an attacking player,’ Robson said on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast.
‘And I’m always biased in that I think a defender or central midfielder; I think they are more natural choices to be captain and to influence the team.
‘I think the captain should be someone who is vocal and aggressive in the game and sets the tone.
‘That’s how I see my captain. So Bruno, even though I love him and I think he’s a great player, my captain would probably be somebody else in the squad.
‘I actually see it in Harry (Maguire) now, where he’s taking that responsibility on. He knows he has come through a bad period and he had to get that into his game; organization and demanding people around him. I think he’s brought that into his game now.
‘Casemiro, he is an organiser. He tells people what he wants on a football pitch. You can see him, when the goalkeeper plays out from the back, the two centre-backs (split) and Casemiro, when he sees people pressing, he goes “no, I’m going to kick it long”.
‘You can see he’s got something about him where he understands the game, reads it and goes; ‘no, we’re not doing that. Let’s press up the park’. He will take that responsibility on, and that’s what he has to do.’
