Ivan Fedotov has joined the Flyers nine years after they drafted him as a goalie.
After a delay due to mandatory Russian military service, Ivan Fedotov had his contract with CSKA Moscow terminated on Thursday. He will meet with Flyers general manager Danny Briere for a media session on Friday at the team's New Jersey headquarters.
CSKA announced the sudden termination of Fedotov's contract with one year remaining, stating that they still hold his KHL rights and that the club wishes him luck in his future career.
The Flyers selected Fedotov in the seventh round of the 2015 draft. At 27 years old, he is under contract with the Flyers this season after his initial deal, signed in May 2022, was extended. He tried to come to North America in July 2022 but was instead taken to a remote military base in the Arctic Circle for a year of service.
After completing his military service, Fedotov signed a two-year contract with CSKA last summer. He played 49 games for the team in the past season, until it was eliminated in the first round of the KHL's Gagarin Cup playoffs on March 8.
Last summer, due to Fedotov's existing NHL contract, the International Ice Hockey Federation ruled in favor of the Flyers and sanctioned him and CSKA.
Fedotov was the starting goalie for the Russian team at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where they reached the final but lost to Finland.
