A train carrying passengers derailed in Cumbria, leading to the closure of a busy part of the railway all the way to Lancashire.
The Northern Rail service, with eight people on board, derailed near Grange-over-Sands on its way to Barrow at around 6am on Friday morning.
The four passengers and four staff members were safely taken off the train with no injuries.
However, all services between Barrow-in-Furness and Lancaster were stopped, affecting trips between Cumbria and Manchester Airport.
Northern Rail cautioned that there will be ‘significant disruption’, which is likely to continue until the end of the day.
Passengers can use their tickets on lines run by other companies, and substitute buses are being organized.
A representative for Northern Rail said: ‘We are concentrating on helping colleagues and customers involved in the incident and on reducing the impact this incident will have on other services.
‘We’re collaborating closely with Network Rail and others to learn more about what occurred.’
Network Rail added: ‘We sincerely apologize for the disruption and encourage passengers to please check with Northern or National Rail Enquiries for the latest travel information, including alternative travel options.’
