Greg Rutherford suffered a severe injury during Dancing On Ice, describing it as 'horribly painful.' He had to withdraw from the final

Greg Rutherford has talked about his 'extremely painful' Dancing on Ice injury that led to him pulling out of the final.

The former Olympian dropped out of the event on Sunday, and Ryan Thomas was crowned champion, after sustaining an injury during rehearsals. He explained how severe the injury was, mentioning that he 'effectively gave [himself] a C-section' while attempting a move with the pro ice-skaters Brendyn Hatfield and Colin Grafton.

He shared on Instagram that the injury was so severe that it required surgery, and he hadn't been able to discuss it earlier due to the recovery process.

He elaborated, 'I leapt through the legs of Brendyn and Colin and managed to tear all of my abs as well as herniate. So I effectively gave myself a C-section.'

The athlete also acknowledged the excruciating pain and the upcoming surgery.

He added, 'It was very painful, pretty horrible.'

He mentioned, 'It needs to be operated on today and then I’ll be properly on the mend.'

After missing out on the final, Greg admitted to feeling 'very sore and very tired' during his recovery.

In an Instagram post, Greg updated his followers about seeing a specialist and having upcoming scans.

He expressed, 'I’m very sore and very tired so I’m going to get an early night tonight. But again I cannot believe the amount of lovely messages I’ve had so thanks very much. I’ll update everybody once I know what the next step is. This is grim.'

As he accepted the trophy, Ryan dedicated the win to Greg, saying: 'This trophy’s for you mate.'

Following his win, Ryan humorously mentioned on Lorraine how he wanted to give his trophy to the injured athlete.

Greg responded on his Instagram Stories, saying: 'After having a scan on my stomach, I’ve just seen what Ryan’s been saying on Lorraine.'

He continued, 'First and foremost Ryan, you should never have had imposter syndrome: you were the worthy winner of the show. You were incredible from day one. The King of Spin and just an amazing human to be around.'

'You can keep the trophy,' he laughed.
