Knives Out and Blade Runner actor M Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88, as confirmed by his manager.

The actor appeared in more than 200 films and TV shows over his six-decade career, including My Best Friend’s Wedding alongside Julia Roberts.

Walsh died on Tuesday of a cardiac arrest at Kerbs Memorial Hospital in St. Albans, Vermont, according to his manager Sandy Joseph. Metro.co.uk.

He is best known for playing Captain Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, alongside Harrison Ford, and Mr Proofroc in the 2019 Daniel Craig-starring Knives Out.

In 2017, Walsh talked about filming Blade Runner and joked that only Ridley understood the premise.

'We all sat there and it ended. And nothing,' he revealed while laughing in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

'We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done! The only one who seemed to get it was Ridley.'

Walsh also appeared in the Steve Martin film The Jerk, the Baz Luhrmann classic Romeo + Juliet with Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert Redford feature directorial debut Ordinary People and Calvary with Brendan Gleeson.

His most recent role was in the Western film Outlaw Posse, which starred Whoopi Goldberg and was released this year.

After his student years, he pursued a career in Hollywood, first securing small roles in the 60s films Alice’s Restaurant, Midnight Cowboy, and Stiletto.

He came to prominence in the iconic 1977 hockey comedy film Slap Shot, which starred Paul Newman, and the 1978 crime movie Straight Time.

Well-regarded by esteemed directors, Walsh continued to collaborate with directors such as the Coen Brothers on Raising Arizona and Blood Spirit, and Mike Nichols on Silkwood, who cast Meryl Streep in the lead role.

Metro.co.uk has reached out to Walsh’s representative for comment.
