California's Governor Gavin Newsom (D) has revealed a new collaboration with car manufacturer Stellantis on Tuesday which aims to increase the number of environmentally friendly cars in the state.

Stellantis, the company behind brands such as Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram, is set to become part of the group of five other major car manufacturers which previously committed to California's plan to reduce emissions in 2019. governor’s office expressed that Stellantis will prevent up to 12 million additional metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions by the model year 2026.

Additionally, Stellantis will comply with the state's requirements regarding sales of zero-emission light-duty vehicles until 2030.

Newsom stated in a release, “This collaboration with Stellantis will help California reach our ambitious targets to significantly reduce pollution and increase the number of environmentally friendly cars on the roads.”

He further added, “The biggest and most influential companies in the world understand that this is how we can fight climate change together, and it’s another example of the private sector joining California to help millions of people get into clean vehicles.”

Ford, Honda, BMW of North America, and Volkswagen Group of America had already committed to the emissions standards in 2019. In the agreement with Stellantis, the automaker will allocate $4 million for public charging infrastructure in rural areas and public parks in California. It will also invest $6 million in other states that have adopted California’s emission standards. Stellantis CEO Carlos Tavares called the agreement a “mutually beneficial solution” in a statement.

“This agreement will prevent 10 to 12 million metric tons [of] greenhouse gas emissions over the course of the agreement and will also enable our U.S. customers to fully benefit from our advanced technologies, including five plug-in hybrids and two fully electric vehicles,” Tavares said.

“We remain as determined as ever to offer sustainable options across our brand portfolio and being a leader in the global decarbonization efforts,” he added.
