Move Forward MP Rangsiman Rome asked today if the government had been dishonest about the condition of convicted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, pointing to his packed schedule during his three-day visit to his hometown of Chiang Mai.
He mentioned that the government had stated that Thaksin was very ill and needed medical attention, but he was suddenly released from the Police General Hospital to his Ban Chan Song La mansion on February 18 and is now in Chiang Mai.th He acknowledged, however, that Thaksin wields significant influence in Thai politics, given the strong reaction from Pheu Thai MPs regarding the opposition's desire to discuss the government's treatment of Thaksin compared to their subdued response to debating Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, leading some to question who the actual prime minister of Thailand really is.
Rangsiman expressed uncertainty about whether Thaksin's visit to Chiang Mai has political motives, as the elections for mayors of several Provincial Administrative Organisations are approaching.
He expressed the desire for people to focus on the government's sincerity and truthfulness concerning the Thaksin issue, acknowledging that the former prime minister had been treated unjustly in the past.
“But the government must not lie to the people,” said the opposition MP, adding that the issue should be settled through the legal framework.
