Novak Djokovic was 'upset' to witness Rafael Nadal pull out of Indian Wells due to injury and has now admitted that he might retire soon.

Djokovic and Nadal have both previously acknowledged that they are nearing the end of their careers as the 'Big Three' era in tennis comes to a close.

The two tennis legends have won a total of 46 Grand Slam singles titles but seem likely to soon follow Roger Federer in retiring from the sport.

Djokovic acknowledged this summer that he 'does not know how long' he will continue to compete on the ATP Tour while Nadal revealed that 2024 is expected to be his final year in tennis.

Nadal had intended to make this year a farewell tour for his devoted fans but persistent injury issues led to his withdrawal from the Australian Open, and despite attempts to return in Qatar and California, he has been unable to stay fit.

'It's disappointing for the competition that Rafa had to withdraw, and also for him,' Djokovic commented on Nadal's absence from Indian Wells.

'I actually journeyed with him to America, which was unexpected. It was nice to see him and his family.

'I know he arrived early because he really wanted to adjust to the time zone, get in as much practice as possible, and prepare to play. That's why he arrived early. He gave his all, but it was not meant to be.

'Those moments will come for all of us. You know, when they actually arrive, and you realize that's it, Roger has finished his career, Rafa and I probably won't play much longer.

'It's the end of an era, and it's disappointing, but at the same time, I think there are a lot of wonderful moments, matches, and milestones that we can celebrate when it comes to each of us and all of us as a group.'
