The Biden administration plans to give around $285 million from the CHIPS for America Program to support the development and research of digital twins in the semiconductor industry. This information was announced by the Commerce Department and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) on Monday..

The new announcement about the funding opportunity is a part of the U.S. effort to encourage domestic semiconductor production. The funding will be used to establish and operate a CHIPS Manufacturing USA Institute focused on digital twins for the semiconductor industry. A digital twin can be in the cloud and can create opportunities to speed up innovation and reduce research and development costs. It can also utilize emerging technology, such as artificial intelligence, to expedite chip design, as stated by the administration.

This new Manufacturing USA institute will not only help the U.S. become a leader in developing this new semiconductor technology, but also help train the next generation of American workers and researchers to utilize digital twins for future advancements in chip research and production,” according to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo.

NIST Director Laurie E. Locascio mentioned in a statement that digital twin technology will help revolutionize the semiconductor industry.”

This is a great example of how CHIPS for America is uniting research institutions and industry partners through public-private partnerships to facilitate the rapid adoption of innovations that will improve domestic competitiveness for years to come,” Locascio added.

The Biden administration will grant roughly $285 million in funding from the CHIPS for America Program for development and research of digital twins in the semiconductor industry, the Commerce Department and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced Monday. The latest announcement for the notice of funding opportunity is part of the push from…

his is a prime example of how CHIPS for America is bringing research institutions and industry partners together in public private partnership to enable rapid adoption of innovations that will enhance domestic competitiveness for decades to come,” Locascio added.

The CHIPS Manufacturing USA Program will host a one-day hybrid meeting for potential applications for the funding next Thursday.
