Donald Trump asserted that everyone in the country, including liberals, supported the revocation of Roe v. Wade, but now they are only protesting it for political reasons. Roe v. Wade overturning, but they’re only objecting now for political reasons.
At a rally in Freeland, Michigan, Trump stated that liberals used to be indifferent to abortion rights.
“Everybody wanted this to be done!” he said regarding the Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization decision that annulled Roe v. While he didn’t say when this change allegedly happened among liberals, Gallup polls going back to 1975 show that most Democrats want abortion to be legal in all or some situations. When it comes to Roe specifically, a CNN poll from last month found that 65 percent of Americans disapproved of the decision to overturn it, which is similar to what polls found in the previous two years.
Trump has made this claim several times before.
“I was proudly the person responsible for the ending of something that all legal scholars, both sides, wanted and, in fact, demanded be ended: Roe v. Wade. They wanted it ended,” he said in a video statement last month.
CNN ran a fact check on his claim last month and found that it’s just not true that all legal scholars wanted Roe overturned.
“Any claim that all legal scholars wanted Roe overturned is mind-numbingly false,” Rutgers Law School professor Kimberly Mutcherson told CNN.
“Please make clear that the facts are the opposite of Trump’s claims,” Yale Law School professor Reva Siegel told CNN. Several other law professors also told CNN that his claim is false.
At the same rally, Trump accused President Joe Biden of letting men in girls’ bathrooms, which didn’t happen.
“I know you’ll be extremely happy to know that the new Biden policy is to let men in every girls’ bathroom,” Trump said. “Every bathroom! Every locker room! Ladies, get ready because the men are coming in!”
He may be referring to Title IX rules from the Department of Education that ban discrimination against LGBTQ+ students. While such rules don’t allow men to use girls’ bathrooms, many conservatives often refer to transgender girls as adult cisgender men in order to make them seem more scary and their use of facilities seem more inappropriate.
