Crime writer Don Winslow announced he is stepping away from his job after more than 30 years to focus on political activism and challenging the MAGA movement.
The final book in his Danny Ryan series, “City in Ruins,” was launched last month and marks the end of both the series and his writing profession, he informed various media organizations this week.
Winslow has been involved in political activism for some time, releasing a series of online videos targeting former President Trump and other Republican leaders. In one video, titled “#DonaldTrumpLifetimeOfLies,” Trump is labelled as a “con-man” and a liar.
His videos, created with screenwriter Shane Salerno, have gained hundreds of thousands of views in recent years.
In an interview with The New York Times, Winslow acknowledged that his books cannot reach the audiences he is aiming for in a short period of time.
“I can't reach that many people with a novel,” he stated to The Times. “And the novels take so much time, in an era where really what is needed are much faster responses.”
Since 2015, he has felt the need to focus more on opposing what he believes is “a neofascist movement in America led by a wannabe dictator.”
The current state of the country since 2015 has led Winslow to believe that his efforts are better directed towards opposing, to be frank, Donald Trump,” he told Rolling Stone.
In another interview with USA Today, Winslow stated that Trump poses a “serious threat to our democracy,” and urged Americans to participate in city, state and federal elections.
During his writing career of nearly 31 years, Winslow released 21 novels, various short stories for anthologies and magazines, and has columns published in a variety of national outlets.
