Most people in the U.S. favor increasing the number of border agents and immigration judges, according to a survey

Most people in the U.S. are in favor of the Biden administration hiring more border patrol agents and immigration judges as there continues to be a large number of migrants at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to a new survey.

The survey was conducted by The Associated Press-NORC Center. The survey was released on Friday and shows that most of the public supports ideas related to immigration and security at the southern border, while there is currently a lack of progress on related legislation in Congress.

About 58 percent of those surveyed said they strongly or somewhat support the U.S. hiring more immigration judges and court staff to speed up the process for asylum seekers. The survey also found that about 64 percent strongly or somewhat support hiring more border patrol agents.

When considering political party, 79 percent of Republicans and 54 percent of Democrats, as well as 56 percent of independents, support hiring more border patrol agents, according to the poll.

The survey found that around half of the respondents agree that the U.S. should decrease the number of migrants allowed to seek asylum at the southern border.

Although 58 percent of adults consider immigration an important issue, it is seen as less important than the economy, health care, crime or gun policy according to the poll.

In the most recent survey, 31 percent of respondents approve of President Biden's handling of immigration, which is an improvement from the previous year. However, a smaller percentage, 30 percent, approve of Biden's handling of border security, which has worsened over the past year.

Regarding solutions to prevent illegal crossings, the border wall has been the most divisive. Only 42 percent of respondents said they support building a wall, with Republicans more likely to support that option, according to the report.

The Biden administration recently achieved a victory when a federal appeals court issued a ruling that extends the block on a Texas immigration law giving local law enforcement the power to arrest people suspected of entering the country illegally. A ruling has been issued by a federal appeals court on Tuesday that extends the block on a Texas immigration law giving local law enforcement the power to arrest people suspected of entering the country illegally. In his State of the Union address earlier this month, Biden requested that Congress send him a border bill after months of failed negotiation.

The AP-NORC survey was carried out from March 21 to 25 among 1,282 adults and has a margin of error of 3.8 percentage points.
