As far as comebacks are concerned, it could not have gone much better for Toni Kroos.
The midfielder, who was part of the World Cup winning team for his country in 2014, was appearing for Germany for the first time since retiring from international duty in 2021.
The renowned midfielder, 34, was persuaded to end his retirement by Julian Nagelsmann for the European Championships in Germany this summer.
The four-time World Cup champions have faced a decline in their fortunes lately, and they were eliminated from the last Euros by England at Wembley.
However, Nagelsmann’s arrival has led to improved performances, and they achieved their most impressive victory under the former Bayern Munich boss with a 2-0 win against France in Paris on Saturday.
Kroos played a vital role in that win when, just seven seconds after kick-off, he delivered a long pass to Bayer Leverkusen playmaker Florian Wirtz to score the first goal.
The goal resulted from a clear tactical instruction from Nagelsmann, which involved four Germany attackers sprinting into France’s half following kick off, and Kroos finding Wirtz.
‘We practiced it ahead of time and, in fact, that was exactly our plan,’ said Kroos.
