Rumors suggest that the PS5 Pro may come out in autumn this year with more specifications being leaked

More information has possibly been disclosed about the PS5 Pro, which is expected to be released later this year.

Sony has not confirmed whether the PS5 Pro actually exists yet, but it seems like an announcement could be imminent, following a wave of recent leaks.

While rumors about an upgraded PlayStation 5 console started last year, a recent leak apparently revealed various specifications about the console – including significant boosts in ray-tracing speed, a GPU with 33.5 teraflops, and the inclusion of Sony’s new upscaling technology.

That leak has now been confirmed by another source, who has added further details, along with the suggestion of a potential release date.

According to the new report, the PS5 Pro’s system memory will be 576GB/s, which is a 28% increase over the standard console’s 448GB/s. It’s claimed the system memory is also more efficient in the PS5 Pro, ‘so the bandwidth gain may increase’ above this 28% boost.

The CPU is said to be identical to the standard PlayStation 5, but the Pro has a ‘high CPU frequency mode’ which increases the clock speed to 3.85GHz. This is a 10% increase over the original console.

The Insider Gaming report also claims the PS5 Pro’s audio processing runs at a higher speed, which results in the ACM library having 35% more performance.

In order to have a ‘competitive’ price, the PS5 Pro is said to have the same detachable disc drive and 1TB of storage as the PS5 Slim.

As for the release date, the PS5 Pro is apparently aiming for a ‘tentative holiday 2024 release’, but it’s noted that this could change due to the lack of first party titles slated for this year. The console had been expected to launch in 2024 for a while now, so this tracks with previous rumors.

If a lack of first party games is deemed an issue though it’s not clear when that could be rectified, as Sony has already stated none are expected in the next 12 months and so there may be nothing till Marvel’s Wolverine in autumn 2025.

While all leaks should be taken with a grain of salt, this feels like the most concrete information so far. Insider Gaming also reports that PS5 Pro devkits have been available to first party studios since September last year, and third parties since January 2024, so it’s likely that’s why some details have slipped through the net.

Sony has traditionally always held a State Of Play presentation in May or June, which might be when we finally get official details about the console.
