A man was taken into custody after an unprovoked attack on a woman waiting at a bus stop in Leeds.
The woman, who is in her thirties, was struck with a broken glass bottle and sustained cuts to her head and neck during the assault by a stranger at around 9pm last night.
Police are considering the attack, which took place on Otley Road in Headingley, as attempted murder.
A 32-year-old man was apprehended by security personnel nearby and is currently in custody.
Detective Inspector Richard James stated: ‘Based on our investigations so far, it seems that this was an unprovoked assault by a man who was not familiar to the victim.
‘Security personnel responded swiftly to this incident, detained a male, and ensured the safety of the victim until the arrival of the police.
‘The woman who was involved has received medical attention and is receiving support from specially trained officers following a highly distressing incident.
‘I understand the apprehension that this incident may provoke in the broader community, particularly among other women, and I want to reassure you that we have a man in custody and a thorough investigation is underway.
‘To aid this investigation, I would urge anyone who was in the vicinity around the time of this crime and witnessed or heard anything that may be relevant to contact us urgently.’
