BBC viewers were puzzled by a strange alert sound that played during the 10pm news, reportedly for several minutes.
As broadcaster Reeta Chakrabarti delivered the evening headlines, following Comic Relief’s Red Nose Day fundraiser, the beeping noise could be heard on both TV and BBC iPlayer, causing worry for some.
Live TV is no stranger to mistakes and problems, with recent weeks seeing accidental cursing and presenters forgetting they were on air, but the supposed loud alert continued for a few minutes, it’s been said.
TV critic Scott Bryan shared the technical problem on X, writing: ‘Yes it wasn’t just you. BBC One had a strange alert sound for several minutes around 10pm.’
He added: ‘It happened on my TV but it also happened on iPlayer, for any geeks wondering.’
Others were just as puzzled, with viewer Joshua writing: ‘I was literally in a hotel room and called down to complain the TV was broken.’
Tracy added: ‘Glad it wasn’t just me… What the hell was it? Thought I was off to buy a new TV/sound system in the morning…’
Reeta later apologized for the glitch, telling viewers: ‘And just to say that some of our viewers may have heard audience interference at the start of our programme tonight, apologies for that.’
Shocked viewer Chris also wrote: ‘@BBCNews that was weird sound interference at start of BBC 1 News at Ten. Fortunately only lasted 20 seconds.’
‘My ears hurt,’ Josh added.
