Games Inbox: Concerns about poor sales of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, success of Unicorn Overlord, and anticipation for Dragon’s Dogma 2

The Friday letters page believes Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic should be cancelled, as one reader wishes for Dino Crisis 4.

    Watch your step
I was surprised to read that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth experienced a 91% decrease in its second week sales and had the worst first week performance of any recent game in the series, including the Western style Final Fantasy 16.

This is very distressing because, like almost everyone else who has written to the Inbox about it, it is an amazing game and probably my favorite since the SNES era. It truly is that good, with a perfect mix of comedy, drama, and really enjoyable gameplay.

Apparently, UK sales were 34% lower compared to the Remake, so it’s not just Japan, though only Japan provides actual numbers, allowing us to see exactly how things went. I find it hard to believe that Final Fantasy 7 Remake sold 702,853 in its first week and Rebirth only sold 262,656, that is a massive drop.

So does that mean Rebirth has been a failure? I really hope not, and I especially hope it doesn’t affect their approach to the third and final game.
    Rodan

GC: There are enough issues with the figures to make it unclear just how well it's done. Firstly, the numbers are only for physical sales, and importantly, Final Fantasy 7 Remake was released in the middle of a pandemic, greatly boosting its success. Additionally, all modern Final Fantasy games, dating back to Final Fantasy 13, have experienced second week drops of 87% or more. Rebirth’s numbers are clearly not great, but they're not significantly different from previous games.

    Unicorn overload
I just wanted to express how much I’ve been enjoying Unicorn Overlord. I don’t think it’s the type of game that’s likely to be successful in the UK, but as someone who made the effort to import Ogre Battle and really enjoys Vanillaware’s games, this has been fantastic, even better than 13 Sentinels.

Even compared to Ogre Battle, it’s a very unique approach to a tactical role-playing game and if only the story had been a bit better, I think it would’ve been close to perfect for what it was trying to achieve.

It seems to have been an unexpectedly big hit too, with the physical edition and collector’s editions selling out globally. I imagine they probably didn’t produce that many, so I don’t know how significant of a feat that really is, but it definitely seems to have exceeded expectations. Highly recommended by me.

    Last minute preparations
Anyone else excited for Dragon’s Dogma 2? I’ve been waiting for this sequel for so long I genuinely never thought it would happen, but now we’re just a week away and I’m extremely enthusiastic.
I’ve already created all my characters using the character creator they released, and I’ve been playing the original a bit just to refresh my memory of the basics and get into the mood.

I know I’m probably setting myself up for disappointment, but I am basically going to lock myself in my house next weekend and play nothing but. Here’s to hoping I don’t end up looking foolish two weeks from now.

The right person for the position
It’s reassuring to learn that a group of developers have left Embracer, but I still don’t understand how Saber will produce a Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic remake. In my opinion, the original is one of the best role-playing games ever and required BioWare to be at their best.

The idea that they handed it to Aspyr, who only work on inexpensive ports and remasters, was always absurd. I fail to see how the people known for World War Z can be much of an improvement. What do they know about role-playing games?

Unless it’s going to be an exact remake, with no changes other than the visuals, I can't see that they have the skill or the background to do it properly. That’s not an insult, I wouldn’t entrust BioWare to create a multiplayer zombie shooter either, different people have different areas of expertise.

I was disappointed when EA cancelled their Respawn Star Wars shooter, but I wouldn’t mind at all if the Knights Of The Old Republic remake was also cancelled. I just don’t see it ever succeeding.

A quick way to earn money
Uncertain about what Ratcatcher wants done to counter the potential success of GTA 6.

Rockstar have consistently produced high-quality products for over 20 years and have continued to support and update them.

If anything, other developers and publishers should take note and try to do the same.

Also, top-notch independent movies still thrive in a world of big franchises. What doesn’t succeed, however, is short-term profiteering.
    James

GC: If only that were accurate.

    65 million year delay
I notice they’re discussing making new Jurassic Park movies again, with a new set of characters, so, because the last trilogy earned a huge amount of money, can I please request games companies in advance to create more dinosaur games.

I know this is a recurring joke on these pages but why are dinosaur games so uncommon? They can’t be operating on the idea that dinosaur games never sell because they never produce any to find out!

Capcom are the only ones who made an effort with Exoprimal but that’s a multiplayer only game and while it’s acceptable I would eagerly anticipate them remaking Dino Crisis or creating a new sequel.

I don’t expect it, but I really don’t see how something as unusual as Kunitsu-Gami: Path Of The Goddess (which, don’t get me wrong, looks good) gets created but a game inspired by one of the best-selling film franchises of all time doesn’t get a chance.

I want to ride dinosaurs, I want to shoot dinosaurs, and I want to flee in terror from dinosaurs. Am I really asking too much?

    Gradually becoming outnumbered
Nothing about the Silent Hill revival makes sense to me, starting with why it’s being prioritized over Castlevania. But I guess they thought Silent Hill would be cheaper to make? That might be true but a) Konami is actually quite a wealthy company and b) hardly anyone has ever cared about Silent Hill beyond a small group of dedicated fans.

I’m part of that group, so in theory I’m in favor of this anyway, except I’m not really because all this is doing is damaging the reputation of the series and creating even fewer good games compared to bad ones. Suddenly I understand how Star Wars fans feel.

    Blissful lack of knowledge
When it comes to Summer Game Fest and the other events that are not E3 this year, I'm really eager to find out what Nintendo is going to announce. It's not only interesting as a fan, but also because I know how unpredictable Nintendo can be and there's very little clue about their plans.

There are some good ideas about Metroid Prime 4, a new Super Mario, a new Donkey Kong, and a new Mario Kart, but you could probably say the same for most of their other series as well. They'll want to release a lot of popular games in the first year, because that really worked well with the Switch, but clearly not all four of those, especially when you also have games like Animal Crossing and Splatoon that are also going to be very popular.

I truly have no clue what they'll do and that makes me very content. I guess if you were being sarcastic, you could say the same about Sony but in their case they consistently do nothing at all, whereas with Nintendo you know they're actually working towards something real.

I'm happy to wait and see, but at the same time I really hope for some major news in June, when there would normally be E3.

    Less successful competitors
I've never come across the London Gaming Market before but I will now be attending on Sunday, so thanks for that heads-up.
    Gunther

Summer Game Fest has a long, long way to go before it can be as enjoyable as E3. Last year's event was dull and had nothing of interest, I don't have much hope for it.
