The Chicago White Sox players visited the Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago and took part in an obstacle course with kids during a surprise visit in Bridgeport on Thursday.

Last season, the Sox faced various challenges on their way to a goal. 101 lossesThey will try to improve as pitchers and catchers are set to report to spring training on Feb. 14.

Manager Pedro Grifol isn't focused on the first game of the season or beyond.

At the event on Thursday, Grifol stated, "I'm concentrating on the initial week of spring training and our goal to win during that time. We need to prepare to win baseball games in spring training and take it step by step, evaluating and addressing any issues."

Grifol emphasized the need for extensive work before the first game and ongoing communication between staff and players to ensure readiness for day one.

Since the disappointing 2023 season ended, there have been pitching and hitting summits.

Grifol explained, "After the final game, our focus shifted. There has been effective communication, and Chris Getz, the general manager, has established organizational principles. I have my own playing style in mind, and the players will be involved in the process."

This spring is markedly different from last year, with emphasis on energy and attention to detail during training.

Grifol acknowledges the importance of action beyond words.

Grifol emphasized the need to demonstrate their commitment on the field and prove to the fans that they are capable of a different style of play.

Grifol expressed his enthusiasm for spring training, praising the energy displayed by the players, front office, and coaching staff, as well as the addition of five new coaches.

Grifol is pleased with the team's offseason moves and anticipates strong competition during camp.

He noted the increased depth in the team's rotation compared to the previous year, with around 15-16 potential starters, including young talents from Double A and Triple A.

One of the experienced starters in consideration could be Dylan Cease. brought up in trade speculation throughout the offseason. Grifol stated that Cease has not been bothered by the talk about the gossip.

“I spoke with him yesterday, and it was a wonderful conversation. We discussed him potentially pitching on opening day,” Grifol said. “He's getting ready for that and he's feeling excellent. He's practicing pitching, and he has no pain. He's enthusiastic about this team. He's excited about the new players we've got, excited about our catching. Brian Bannister, who is a senior adviser to pitching, is now part of the organization. He's excited to start working with him and pitching coach Ethan Katz.

“He's not bothered by all the trade talks and everything else. If it happens, he understands it's part of the business. But as I told him, right now he's our opening-day starter, so he should prepare for that.”
