In the Div. 3 boys basketball state semifinal on Wednesday night, Charlestown, the top seed, showed its determination in the paint to reach the program's first state final since 2005.

After a physical game in the first three quarters, Charlestown dominated the fourth quarter, leading to a 70-57 victory over Taconic at Worcester State.

In the final quarter, everyone contributed, but Jaylen Hunter-Coleman (23 points, nine rebounds, four steals), Damante Vanheyningen (19 points), and Jaylin Williams Crawford (12 points, 15 rebounds, four blocks) were the standout players.

Taconic's attempt to defend its Div. 5 state championship fell short, while Charlestown avenged its loss in the Div. 2 state semifinal. They will now face No. 2 Old Rochester at the Tsongas Center this weekend.

Townies' head coach Hugh Coleman expressed his joy for the boys' achievement and emphasized the importance of character and academic success, not just basketball.

At the start, Taconic challenged Charlestown's athleticism and strength, securing 10 offensive rebounds in the first quarter. However, Charlestown's improved defense and rebounding led to a 30-30 tie at halftime.

Following adjustments during halftime, Charlestown improved its rebounding and overcame poor three-point shooting to enter the second half with a renewed mindset.

Coleman highlighted the team's emphasis on rebounds and credited the players for their effort in turning the game around.

A strong performance from Hunter-Coleman and Williams Crawford helped Charlestown establish a lead in the third quarter. Although Taconic fought back, Charlestown maintained a 47-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

Charlestown's dominance continued in the fourth quarter.

In the final quarter, Charlestown limited Taconic's offensive rebounds, while scoring with three-pointers and strong drives, resulting in a 56-45 lead.

Trevari Andrews played a crucial role in securing rebounds for Charlestown in the final minutes, contributing to the team's comfortable lead.

Coleman acknowledged the importance of perseverance in the state tournament for both teams, emphasizing his team's ability to remain composed in the face of adversity.
