Viewers criticized a joke from Jimmy Carr’s new Netflix special as 'disappointing'

A joke from Jimmy Carr’s upcoming Netflix The special did not resonate with viewers.

The 51-year-old British comedian is familiar with controversial jokes and making fun of audience members, and previously stated that the joke that would end his career is already public.

After ‘being cancelled’ in 2022 after making a joke about Romas killed in the Holocaust, the comedian is now getting ready to come back with a new Netflix special, called Jimmy Carr: Natural Born Killer.

In a first glimpse of his latest show, which will be available on the streaming platform on April 16, he talks about being cancelled and people getting offended by his jokes.

He states: 'You can’t go around apologising for jokes, they’re jokes. So I’ve got a plan. The next time I get cancelled over a joke, I’m going to come out on the day of the cancellation. I’m going to say, I’ve rehearsed this, I’m going to say,' he then continued in a mocking voice: '”I’m sorry.”'

Jimmy continues: 'The people that I’ve offended will say, “You don’t really mean that apology.” And I’ll say, “So you say I can say something and not mean it? Now you’re getting it”.'

The official Netflix account shared the clip with viewers, who took to the comment section to share their thoughts — and many were pointing out the same issue.

As user Simon Hewitt expressed: ‘I quite like Jimmy Carr – but for someone that has multiple Netflix shows, he does talk about being cancelled a lot.’

Dave Yeboah agreed: ‘Another lucrative, widely advertised deal with the world’s largest streaming service. I wish I’d been cancelled.’

And Ashles complained: ‘Do all Netflix comedians share the same one joke? Because talking at length about all the things you ‘can't say’ and being ‘cancelled’ for it is getting real … old now.’

Fans of Jimmy were unimpressed with the new clip, with user Paddy complaining ‘I like Jimmy… but these routines are getting so samey and boring. I’m not offended, I’m just disappointed.’

@Musktweetagain called it ‘unfunny,’ and Dan Shelley called it ‘painfully unfunny,’ while user Amy Lloyd-Placks joked ‘you either die a comedian or lve long enough to become the joke.’

Some commenters enjoyed the clip, with user Reece leaving a laughing and fire emoji and Um_iya writing ‘Jimmy is the best’.

Natural Born Killer will mark Jimmy’s third Netflix special, after 2016’s Funny Business and 2021’s His Dark Material, which caused controversy over a joke he made about the Holocaust.

In the offending gag, he said people ‘never mention the thousands of Gypsies that were killed by the Nazis’ in the Holocaust, because ‘no one ever wants to talk about the positives’.

Jimmy faced severe backlash from Traveller and Roma charities, anti-fascist organisations, other public figures and even several MPs.

Fellow comedian David Baddiel criticized the joke as ‘cruel and inhumane,’ however he was supported by other celebrities including Only Connect star Victoria Coren-Mitchell.

Since the outcry, Jimmy has gone on a big tour and hosted many shows, but got into trouble earlier this month after a deaf woman in the front row was upset by a joke she said he made about her.

Near the end of the show, Ahlen was looking at her iPhone as she was using a transcribing app to keep track of what Carr was saying during his set.

It’s said he mentioned the beret she was wearing and her phone and asked if she was going to ‘call for backup from the French Resistance’.

‘Then, he was talking about how you can say anything about deaf people because they can’t hear you,’ she said. ‘I was shocked – this isn’t comedy!’
