Sen. Tim Scott (R-S.C.) avoided giving a clear answer in a Sunday interview about whether he would agree to accept the 2024 election results, regardless of the winner, and instead stated that former President Trump would win in the White House race.
During an interview on NBC News’s “Meet the Press,” Kristen Welker pressed Scott — who is seen as a potential choice for Trump's vice-presidential nominee — about Trump’s refusal to acknowledge his loss in the 2020 presidential election and his unwillingness to commit to accepting the 2024 election results if he loses.
Welker questioned why he would want to join Trump's team “when there's such a fundamental difference,” and Scott defended Trump’s recent statement.
Welker then asked Scott if he would promise to accept the results of the 2024 election.
“Ultimately, President Donald Trump will be the 47th president of the United States. And I’m looking forward to returning to low inflation and low unemployment,” Scott replied before Welker interrupted.
“Wait, wait, senator. Yes or no; yes or no? Will you accept the election results of 2024, no matter who wins?”
“That is my statement,” Scott answered.
Welker continued to press.
“But just yes or no: Will you accept the election results of 2024?” Welker inquired again.
Scott would not shift from his stance.
“I anticipate President Trump becoming the 47th president. Kristen, you can ask it multiple times,” he said, as Welker interrupted again asking for “just a yes or no answer.”
“The American people will make the decision, and the decision will be for President Trump.”
“I don’t hear you committing to the election results. Will you commit to accepting the election results?”
Scott then shifted to criticizing Welker and her network, stating, “This is why so many Americans believe that NBC is an extension of the Democrat party.”
“Ultimately, I stated what I said. I know that the American people, their voices will be heard, and I believe that President Trump will be our next president. It’s that simple,” he stated.
Welker asked once more, noting Scott is a potential VP nominee, and Scott reiterated his confidence in Trump's victory in 2024 and said, “I’m not going to answer your hypothetical question.”
