In the exciting world of football, there are moments that go beyond the game itself, times when a display of outstanding talent becomes a source of hope for a whole country.
For Thailand, such a moment happened in a full Seoul World Cup Stadium during FIFA qualifications. 2026 World Cup qualifiers on March 21, when Suphanat Mueanta made history.
Seeking their first appearance in a World Cup, Thailand found themselves in a tense battle with Asian footballing giants South Korea.
It was 21-It was the young Suphanat who rose to the occasion, scoring the important goal that secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw. Beyond the score, his goal represented a revival of Thai football’s unbeatable spirit.
Suphanat’s goal not only earned Thailand a valuable FIFA qualifying point but also represented a significant milestone.
He became the first Thai player in 26 years to score against a South Korean team in a competitive match since Thawatchai Damrong-ongtrakul did so during the 1998 Asian Games.
However, when asked about his achievement, Suphanat modestly shifted the focus to the team's collective effort rather than his individual success.
“In fact, who scored the goal didn't matter,” Suphanat said with humility. “I'm happy that we got a point against Korea. The spotlight just happened to be on me. I was fortunate that the ball came my way, and I have to thank my teammate for the assist.”
‘Emergence of a star’
Suphanat’s journey to becoming a national hero is a testament to his commitment and talent. Emerging through the ranks of Buriram United’s youth academy, he made history by becoming the youngest player to play in the Thai League at only 15 years and 8 months old.
He continued to break records, becoming the youngest goal scorer in Thai League history (against Air Force United in 2018) and subsequently impressing in the AFC Champions League by scoring a goal against Beijing Guoan at 16 years old and eight months in 2019.
His time with Belgian Pro League club OH Leuven further enriched Suphanat’s experience, as he demonstrated his adaptability and skill on the European stage.
Suphanat entered into a one-year loan deal with OH Leuven in September 5, 2023. Before the move, he was training with parent club Leicester City while waiting for a work permit.
Finally, on November 1, 2023, Suphanat made his eagerly awaited debut for OH Leuven in the seventh round of the 2023–24 Belgian Cup against Elene-Grotenberge. Just three days later, he made his league debut against Westerlo.
In June 2019, Suphanat received a call-up from head coach Sirisak Yodyardthai to join Thailand’s squad for the 2019 King’s Cup.
He made his international debut on June 5, 2019, in a heated match against arch-rivals Vietnam, where he became the youngest player ever to wear the national team jersey at the age of 16 years and 10 months.
Skipping ahead to January 2024, Suphanat continued to shine, earning a spot in Thailand’s squad for the 2023 AFC Asian Cup held in Qatar, solidifying his status as an up-and-coming star in Asian football.
As Thailand prepares for the next stage of its qualification journey, Suphanat embodies the nation’s hope for a debut World Cup appearance, inspiring the country with his determination, talent, and modesty.
With the next match against South Korea scheduled for Rajamangala National Stadium on March 26, the importance has never been greater.
A victory or another hard-fought tie against the strong Asian soccer team would not only boost Thailand’s morale but also improve their chances of securing their first-ever spot in the final round of World Cup Qualifying.
With Suphanat leading the team, the Thai squad carries the hopes and ambitions of an entire nation, eager to see their football heroes make history.
Despite his crucial role in earning the draw, Suphanat remains humble, recognizing the upcoming challenges. Looking forward to the rematch, he stressed the need for thorough preparation and resilience.
“The match against Korea on Tuesday will be difficult as they will attempt to defeat us on our home turf,” Suphanat said. “We have to devise a game plan to compete against them.”
